With heart disease being the number one cause of death in both men and women, it is time a book is written in a manner that is understood by most people. I deal with the consequences of heart disease every day and I see patients who are otherwise healthy and if it were not for their heart disease they could easily live to be one hundred years old. This book might accomplish that.

Book Synopsis

Living to 100, the dream of all,
The reality of a few!

One of the great tragedies I have observed in my long career as a practicing physician is that most of us, by our life styles, produce the majority of the illnesses that we get. Yes, without realizing it, we are victims of our own behavior. Our thoughts, our reactions, our diets and our bad habits produce this suicidal path that we seem to thrive on. I am firmly convinced that we die too young because of this. Over all of my years in the trenches of primary care medicine, I have repeatedly seen evidence of these observations.

It is from this perspective that this book will examine our number one killer, Heart Disease. I will share my vast experiences with the reader including the role that attitude and spirituality play.  Also presented will be verified, objective data to support my thesis that this plague on our community is preventable and yes, even reversible.

CHAPTER 1: ATTITUDE, SPIRITUALITY, THE KEY TO LONGEVITY

After 35 years of a very active solo practice, being on call 24/7 and literally seeing thousands of patients, I have learned that in addition to all other factors, to all of the sophisticated technology I have at my fingertips, your attitude towards how you deal with you illness is equally if not more important as everything I have to offer. Those of my patients that had a positive attitude and believed in a higher power always did better. This is especially true with heart disease and keeping you alive to at least 100. All studies now indicate that those who are spiritual and pray survive longer.

CHAPTER 2: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR HEART ATTACKS YOU

How many times have you left your doctors office not remembering what was said? Dont feel bad if you answered frequently. Study after study indicates that most patients leave their doctors office confused. You usually are anxious and worried when you go there and very often do not ask questions. I have spent the past 6 years of my life teaching freshman medical students the art of communicating with their patients. The reason that this is so important is that it is vital that you have a thorough understanding of what is happening. The more you understand the process the easier for you to change your lifestyle and deal with the disease. Using my skills as a communicator, I explain, in understandable terms exactly what is going on when your heart attacks you and the things you have to do to prevent it from happening again.

CHAPTER 3: HEART DISEASE IN WOMEN

Yes ladies you are different (thank heavens for the difference). When it comes to heart disease a frequent and justifiable complaint from females is that they are treated differently than men. Doctors for years have paid more attention to chest pain in a man as compared to women and especially to chest pain in menstruating women. Our training was that women, because of the protective effects of estrogen, did not get heart disease. We now realize our error. Heart disease, not breast cancer is the number one killer of women.

CHAPTER 4: WHY DOES OUR HEART ATTACK US?

What's going on in our bodies to permit this often fatal attack? The process that allowed this to happen did not suddenly appear. Understanding the process and the reasons these changes cause us problems is the basis of this chapter. After reading this material you will have a better understanding of my statement that the majority of the illnesses we get are self inflicted. Thats right, from the day that we are old enough to control our destiny we do things to destroy ourselves. This chapter goes into detail.

CHAPTER 5: TRADITIONAL RISK FACTORS

Risk factors, what are they and why are they important.

I am sure that many of the readers of this book have, at least once, gone to their doctor for their annual physical. These annual exams are now under some scrutiny. Why do you do them? What is the benefit? The current thinking is that the major benefit is to learn what your individual risk is for getting a disease. We will describe the risk factors for heart disease, discuss them in detail and learn the steps necessary to deal with these factors. The principal is based upon the concept that if you can eliminate the risks you should be able to prevent the disease.

CHAPTER 6: OBESITY AND WEIGHT LOSS

For years Obesity and diets have been the subject of countless books. In all my years of practice I have experienced more fad diets that I care to recall. They all promise the same thing. Every year a new book, a new fad. Everybody is searching for the magic bullet. I will share my experiences and concepts about these fads and their role in heart disease. In addition a major epidemic is occurring in our youth. Obesity is becoming their number one health problem. Diabetes is on the rise. The lack of exercise, the fast food industry and the computer play a significant part in this epidemic.

CHAPTER 7: THE FAST FOOD INDUSTRY

The role they play in this epidemic. How one nation and a dedicated physician altered their role in making his country the leader in heart attacks is examined This is followed by a plea to the fast food industry and parents to play a role in wiping out this plague on our youth. Talk about waking down a suicidal path, just look at the food they are serving our kids and yes ourselves.

CHAPTER 8: THE NEW RISK FACTORS

In chapter 5, I discuss traditional risk factors. They account for 80% of heart attacks. What about the 20% who do not have any of these factors.  For  years doctors have been confused by patients coming into the emergency room with all of the symptoms and findings of a classic heart attack with none of the traditional risk factors. What causes their attacks? The reader will discover the new factors.

CHAPTER 9: CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE--CHANGE YOUR LIFE

My opening chapter deals with the role of attitude in health. This chapter deals specifically on the ways you can impact your risk of heart problems by altering your attitude.

CHAPTER 10: IT'S ALL ABOUT COPING

Here I deal with the role of stress, coping and illness. I will give the reader the tools necessary to learn the art of coping, which I think is the major cause of illness. I believe strongly that it is not the stress, but the inability to cope with it that causes health problems. Meditation is discussed in detail.

CHAPTER 11 & 12: VITAMINS AND ANTI-OXIDANTS

So do vitamins really help? As a traditional doctor and University professor I, until recently, felt that all supplement vitamins did was make their manufacturers wealthy. Obviously that all has changed. Their role in health is now generally accepted by the medical profession. Much to my surprise, vitamins and anti-oxidants are hot topics at the majority of heart association meetings. The reader will learn not only which ones really help, but how and why they help. I also will discuss the role of the anti-oxidants. We all talk about them, but do we understand what they do and why they are important?

CHAPTER 13: ASPIRIN, THE MIRACLE DRUG

Yes, the common, take two in the morning and call me pill, is truly a miracle drug in heart disease. Again, it is not enough for me to advise you to take them, I will tell you why you should take them and how they may save your life.

CHAPTER 14: PLEASURABLE LIFE STYLE CHANGES

There are pleasurable things you can do to decrease your risk of getting a heart attack. I will describe, based upon recent studies, how sex and alcohol, among other things, may play a role in decreasing your risk of getting a heart attack.

CHAPTER 15: IS THE PROCESS REVERSABLE?

The key question the reader should ask after learning all I offer in this book is, once I have plaque in my arteries, and most of us have some form of heart problem by the time we reach adulthood, can I do something about it, or is it too late? This chapter answers that question and discusses the art of keeping your heart alive for 100 years.

CHAPTER 16: A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE

What do we have to look forward to, what will be changing in the diagnosis and treatment? The past 25 years have been mind boggling, but the next 10 are going to be overwhelming. Surgical techniques, emphasizing robotic and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is here and the techniques will only get more sophisticated. Cloning, gene and stem cell therapy for cancer and other diseases. Yes, the future is bright and we will explore it.
